Avakas Gorge: official closure warning and what to check before visiting

Current verified snapshot — source checked 2 October 2026

The official Visit Cyprus listing currently labels the Avakas Gorge nature trail temporarily closed. A Forestry reminder dated 6 May 2026 says it remains closed until further notice. We have not verified a subsequent official reopening. Do not plan to enter the closed trail on the strength of a tour advert or a recent visitor photograph.

This is a desk check, not a physical Love Akamas inspection.

What we currently know

  • Forestry’s reminder says the closure began on 6 December 2025. It cites water flow, slippery ground and falling rock or earth, and refers to visitors becoming trapped on 25 March 2026.
  • The published nature trail follows the Avgas river into the limestone gorge. A route description explains the place; it does not override a closure.
  • Our planning advice is to choose another outing unless the responsible department confirms reopening. Do not bypass a barrier or enter from another end.

Uncertain / needs field checking

We have no fresh department confirmation, reopening date or on-site sign inspection. Road access, parking and gorge entry are separate questions: reaching the area would not make a closed trail open. A missing barrier would not prove permission.

Please share a dated official reopening notice or photographs of current entrance signs, with the observation date and location. First-hand condition reports are welcome, but do not enter a closed trail to obtain them.
